New Date: Word & Spirit Book Group reads ‘Martyr!’

Martyr! is the acclaimed 2024 debut novel by Iranian-American poet Kaveh Akbar, following a young, newly sober, queer Iranian-American man named Cyrus Shams as he grapples with addiction, grief, and his family's past, particularly the death of his mother in a plane crash, leading him on a surreal journey through art, poetry, and the concept of martyrdom to find meaning and connection. The book is celebrated for its unique voice, blending humor and darkness, and exploring themes of identity, loss, and the search for purpose, earning praise as a New York Times bestseller and a National Book Award finalist.

St. Paul’s Word & Spirit Book Group is known for generous conversations full of heart, humor, and meaningful insights. Meets monthly, typically the last Monday of the month, at 7:00 pm in the Seabury Room at St. Paul’s Church. January’s meeting is postponed by one week to February 2nd due to snow forecast.
