Why does this matter: One of the important roles of bishops in our tradition is welcoming adults into the faith. We believe that each bishop is ordained in the Holy Spirit by the line of bishops going all the way back to St. Peter, who was ordained by Jesus himself. A blessing from the bishop passes on the gift of the Spirit through the hands of Jesus in an unbroken line of church leaders. We call this unbroken line Apostolic Succession.

What does each blessing mean:

Confirmation: If you were baptized as a small baby, someone made promises on your behalf. Confirmation is the mature affirmation of the promises made at your baptism.

Reception: If you were confirmed in another denomination (for example, Catholic or Lutheran), Reception is the rite of officially joining the Episcopal Church.

Reaffirmation: This is a special blessing for those who have been confirmed in the Episcopal Church, and wish to re-dedicate themselves to their Baptismal Promises in our denomination.
